An Easy Counting Technique for Aces and 7s
Tracking the Aces and 7s that enter the Discard Pile is a useful habit in Modern Canasta. It helps you understand how dangerous the pile may be before deciding to Pick the Pack.
A reliable count can also help you evaluate whether an Ace or 7 Canasta is still possible and how many difficult cards you might need to clear from your hand after taking the pile.
Start With Two Numbers
At the beginning of each hand, begin with the count:
0–0
The first number is for Aces, and the second is for 7s.
Update the count whenever one of these cards is discarded. For example:
- 1–2 means one Ace and two 7s are in the pile.
- 3–2 means three Aces and two 7s have been discarded.
Once a player Picks the Pack, the pile is cleared, so simply return your count to 0–0.
Try a Single-Number System
Another option is to use the tens digit for Aces and the ones digit for 7s.
For example:
- Two Aces and three 7s become 23.
- If another Ace is discarded, the count becomes 33.
- If a 7 follows, it changes to 34.
Both methods work equally well. Choose the one that feels most natural and keep updating it throughout the hand.
A simple mental count can give you valuable information before you decide whether the Discard Pile is worth the risk.
